I like to work with mixed media; it frees my imagination and provides endless opportunities for happy accidents that can lead to unpredictable outcomes. The challenge is knowing when to stop.
I have been lucky to be an artist for 20 years. I graduated from Emily Carr in 1991 and am still excited by where art leads me.
I enjoy challenging myself with new techniques & styles. Trying new mediums and exploring ideas are a constant in my daily work.
My current process includes soft colour, glueing paper, followed by sanding and tearing away the layers. This takes an incredible amount of bravery. I spent hours perfecting one idea... and then bury it with another layer of paper. This path of discovery is not for the faint of heart. You can't be precious; you have to move forward with dramatic gestures.
A mixed-media approach is a natural continuation of my background in three dimensional pottery. I never know where the work will lead me and this loss of control is exciting - each painting is a new direction. For me, surprise is the best inspiration.
